Upcoming events

In observance of Black History Month, the Edgecombe County Memorial Library will host the following events:

 

2/2 – 2/27  There will be an art display featuring the work of several local African American

                  Artists.  The art work will remain up throughout the month of February.

 

2/2            African American Art Display Reception.  Pender Room  6:30 pm – 8:00 pm.

                 Come meet the artists and hear them explain their art work and what inspired them to

                  in their particular medium.

 

2/16          PowerPoint presentation “Outstanding Tarboro African American Personalities”.

                 Time: 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm in the Pender Room. This is a presentation produced and

                 directed by local historian C. Rudolph Knight.  It will consist of pictures and short

                 biographies on each individual.  In addition: attendees are asked to bring photographs

                 from the past, i.e., photos of individuals, events, buildings, etc. The photos will be

                 scanned so that a digital copy can be archived in the Library’s Local History

                 collection. At the same time, attendees can be scheduled to be interviewed so that

                 their stories of East-Tarboro will be preserved. The PowerPoint presentation  will be

                 available to be shown upon request on the computers in the Pender Room throughout

                 the month.

 

2/22          African American Read-In.  6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Pender Room at ECML. The public

                  is invited to bring your favorite book written by an African American author and be

                  prepared to read a brief excerpt to the group.  Join over a million readers of all ethnic

                  groups, from 49 states, the West Indies and African countries by participating in this

                  event.  All youth, adults, library patrons, civic leaders, government officials, business

                   leaders, etc. are invited to attend.

 

3/7            Book Signing and Mini Hat and Hair Fashion shows in ECC Mobley Atrium at 4:00

                 pm. The Library will host “An Afternoon with Michael Cunningham”, renown

                 photographer and collaborator of the books: Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in

                 Church Hats (2000); Spirit of Harlem: A Portrait of America’s Most Exciting

                 Neighborhood (2003); Queens: Portraits of Black Women and their Fabulous Hair

                 (2005) and Jewels: 50 Phenomenal Black Women over 50 (2007). Space is limited for

                  this event.  Please call ECML by Wednesday (2/3) to reserve your seat.

The shelving used for this project was donated by the Friends of the Library in recognition of the retirement of former director Dan Swartout (12/08).
